Funadhoo Ice Plant Opens to Support Maldivian Fishermen

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO, has officially inaugurated a new ice plant in Sh. Funadhoo to enhance ice availability for fishermen across the Maldives.

The facility has been formally opened by the President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s as part of his ongoing visit to the Atoll.

The ice plant has the capacity to produce 30 tons of ice per day and can store up to 50 tons daily, providing a significant boost to the local fishing industry.

With the launch of the Funadhoo ice plant, fishermen in the region will now have easier and reliable access to high-quality ice – an essential resource for maintaining the freshness and value of their catch.

The project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to improving fisheries services and expanding essential facilities through MIFCO. By establishing ice plants across the country, the project is expected to reduce both the cost of ice and fuel for fishermen, improving efficiency and supporting livelihoods in the sector.

Since fish is the primary component in Maldivian cuisine, fishing has always been an important part of the beloved Maldivian way of life. After being used for domestic purposes, any extra catch was either saved for future use or conserved for export. Whether made from the day’s fresh catch or from properly preserved tuna products, Maldivian mealtimes are usually enhanced with one or more delectable tuna dishes.
