MIFCO has started purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing above 10 kilograms.

Starting today, MIFCO centers and vessels have begun purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing between 10kg and 15kg. The price for this size category has been set at MVR 20 per kilogram. Today, tuna of this size was purchased by MIFCO vessels at Kooddoo Harbor, Addu Harbor, Fuvahmulah, GDh. Gadhdhoo, and GDh. Thinadhoo.

Furthermore, since late December, MIFCO centers and vessels have been purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing above 15kg at a rate of MVR 25 per kilogram. Similar to skipjack tuna, payments for yellowfin tuna weighed at MIFCO are being disbursed within 48 hours.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to develop the fishing industry and is conducted in collaboration with MIFCO to resolve the challenges faced by yellowfin tuna fishermen. MIFCO believes that this significant step will provide a major solution to the concerns of yellowfin tuna fishermen and lead to further progress in the yellowfin tuna fishery.

Since fish is the primary component in Maldivian cuisine, fishing has always been an important part of the beloved Maldivian way of life. After being used for domestic purposes, any extra catch was either saved for future use or conserved for export. Whether made from the day’s fresh catch or from properly preserved tuna products, Maldivian mealtimes are usually enhanced with one or more delectable tuna dishes.
