The Fish Processing Facility developed by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) in Fuvahmulah is scheduled to commence operations next week.
Development of fisheries infrastructure in Fuvahmulah began in 2019 with the establishment of an ice plant, followed by the initiation of a fish processing facility by a private entity in 2021. However, progress on both projects was halted due to various challenges. The fish processing facility was subsequently contracted to MIFCO to ensure its completion.
While work on the facility experienced further delays, construction resumed in August last year following a visit to Fuvahmulah by MIFCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General (Retd) Faruhath Shaheer, during which assurances were given that the project would be completed within the year.
With construction now complete, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has granted the necessary operational permits, certifying that the facility meets the highest health and safety standards.
The fish purchasing and processing operations at the Fuvahmulah facility will commence next week.
The facility aims to provide the residents of Fuvahmulah with safe and hygienic fish processing and packaging services, ensure a reliable supply of quality fish products, and support efforts to maximize returns from the fisheries sector.
