The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to collaborate on the development of key fisheries infrastructure projects across the Maldives.
The agreements outline a framework for strategic cooperation focused on enhancing cold storage capacity and fish processing capabilities, supporting the continued growth and sustainability of the national fisheries sector.
Under the MoUs, immediate technical studies will commence on several priority projects, including the development of a cold storage and blast freezer facility in Thaa Atoll Hirilandhoo. The partnership will also focus on expanding the existing freezing and cold storage capacity in Addu City, alongside investment in a comprehensive, fully equipped fresh yellowfin tuna export facility.
Additionally, the project in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Thinadhoo will be expanded to include enhanced freezing and cold storage capacity, as well as the development of fish purchasing and export facilities.
Beyond these priority initiatives, MIFCO, CMEC, and the Ministry engaged in discussions on broader opportunities for collaboration aimed at further strengthening and modernizing the fisheries sector in the Maldives.
This partnership reflects MIFCO’s ongoing commitment to increasing value addition, improving supply chain efficiency, and supporting the livelihoods of local fishermen. It also underscores a shared vision to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of the Maldivian fisheries industry.
