The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has begun purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing between 10 kg and 15 kg from today. The price for this category has been set at MVR 20 per kilogram.
Fish within this weight range were purchased today at Kooddoo Harbour, Addu Harbour, and by MIFCO vessels stationed in Fuvahmulah, GDh. Gadhdhoo, and GDh. Thinadhoo.
Since late December, MIFCO centres and vessels have also been purchasing yellowfin tuna weighing over 15 kg at a rate of MVR 25 per kilogram.
Similar to skipjack tuna, payments for yellowfin tuna sold to MIFCO are being disbursed within 48 hours.
The initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector and address the challenges faced by yellowfin tuna fishermen. MIFCO believes that this measure will significantly ease the concerns of yellowfin tuna fishermen and contribute to the further development of the yellowfin tuna fishery.
