The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) today hosted a field visit for participants of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Global Business Network (GBN) Forum 2026, providing first-hand insight into the Maldives’ fisheries industry, value chain, local supply chains, and fish processing operations.
The field visit was jointly organized by MIFCO, the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises. The visit covered three key locations: the Malé Fish Market, the Malé Local Market, and MIFCO’s Kan’duoiygiri facility.
At the Malé Fish Market, participants received an overview of the market’s role within the fisheries value chain, including traditional fishing activities and the movement and sale of fish through the domestic market. The visit provided participants with a practical understanding of how fish moves through the local market and the important role the market plays within the country’s fisheries industry.
At the Malé Local Market, participants were introduced to locally produced goods and gained insight into local supply chains, island livelihoods, and the contribution of locally produced products to the domestic economy.
At Kan’duoiygiri, participants were introduced to MIFCO’s operations and toured the recently opened Dried Fish Factory. The guided tour covered the various stages of fish processing and production, quality control measures, food safety procedures, packaging, and the tuna value chain—from the receipt of raw fish through processing and value addition to the finished product.
The field visit provided participants with practical exposure to the Maldives’ fisheries sector and demonstrated MIFCO’s important role in developing the fisheries industry, adding value to fish products, and strengthening the overall fisheries value chain.
The visit was held as part of the activities organised in conjunction with this year’s SIDS Global Business Network (GBN) Forum and Island Investment Forum, which brought participants from across SIDS to the Maldives to explore business, investment, and economic opportunities.
