The Felivaru Fisheries Complex was opened as a joint venture with the Nippon Suizan Kaisa Limited of Japan and the Maldives government on 3^rd February 1978. When the factory was first opened it had the capacity to produce only 8 metric tons of fish per day. Later in 1982 the government solely owned the factory and initiated the upgrading phases of the factory. A canning factory under the name : Felivaru Tuna Processing Plant” with a capacity to produce 50 metric tons
