The Felivaru Fisheries Complex was opened as a joint venture with the Nippon Suizan Kaisa Limited of Japan and the Maldives government on 3rd February 1978. When the factory was first opened it had the capacity to produce only 8 metric tons of fish per day. Later in 1982 the government solely owned the factory and initiated the upgrading phases of the factory. A canning factory under the name : Felivaru Tuna Processing Plant” with a capacity to produce 50 metric tons
